Boutique stores good for city

Nelson’s reputation as a boutique centre could help it bring more shoppers to the city, says the manager of the city’s retail promotions group. The performance of Nelson’s central business district is the focus of an investigation by Uniquely Nelson and it’s now calling on all business people to have their say. It’s already had one-on-one interviews with 32 representatives from various industries, but all with an interest of the city’s

welfare. One common theme amongst the interviews was Nelson’s boutique offering, says Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan. “One of the biggest things that has come out already – and it is preliminary – is the word boutique. It’s one of our strengths and I don’t mean that in just fashion retailers. I mean it in a broader sense. We have a lot of character and unique retail, arts and entertainment offerings here.”

She says Nelson, like other cities, is suffering from the “changing face of retail” and the boutique nature of the city is something that could help it attract more customers. With stage one of the investigation complete, Uniquely Nelson is now opening it up to the rest of the city by hosting a planning workshop next month. “We always need to be improving. I’m sure there will be some specific topics and dis-

cussions that will come up at this workshop, but we’re going to leave it to audience participation to find out what’s important. I hope it’s not just about free parking. I don’t think that’s the biggest issue facing us all,” she says. The meeting will be held on October 7 at the Kowhai Lounge at NMIT, from 5.30pm. Full results of the investigation will be announced at Uniquely Nelson’s AGM on October 21

The cherry blossoms took centre stage once again during the 13th Cherry Blossom Festival at Miyazu Gardens on Sunday. Around 2000 people stepped out to enjoy a programme of music, food and entertainment in celebration of Spring and Nelson’s long standing relationship with its Japanese sister city, Miyazu. “We were very happy with the turn out and we were particularly happy that the weather shone on us, it was a perfect day,” says chairperson of the Nelson Miyazu Sister City as-

sociation, Lyndal McMeeking. For over 30 years the two cities have enjoyed the benefits of each other’s cultures and friendship, and Lyndal says there are around 150 Japanese families living in the Nelson area. The Cherry Blossom Festival is now a well-established event on the Nelson calendar and featured a full-on day of entertainment, with performances by the Raijin Taiko Drummers, big brush calligraphy, Akiko Miyamoto the Puppeteer, Aikido and Seido Karate demonstrations.

Demand for food bank doubles Locally Owned and Operated

Demand for food packages has doubled since the start of the month and more and more people are turning to community meals, dished up for no charge. Nelson Food Bank manager, Mike Gordon, says demand has jumped from around 20 food packages a week, to 40 a week since the start of September. He says around 300 Nelsonians now rely on free food, either from the food bank or from one of the churches or trusts that provide free meals. In the first week of September, volunteers at the food bank delivered 44 food parcels for

Alcohol fees could be lowered The cost of a licence to sell alcohol at community events could be lowered, but it is unlikely to be put back to what it was a year ago. Last year the fee for a special licence was increased from $64 to $575, as part of the government’s Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act. The increase makes it unaffordable for many community

fundraisers and events to continue to sell alcohol. Last week the Nelson City Council’s planning and regulatory committee agreed and made a recommendation for the licence fees to be open for “discretion” from licensing inspectors. Chair of the planning and regulatory committee, Brian McGurk, says more than 80 per cent of special licences

granted since the regulations came into effect have been for fundraising or community events where alcohol is not the main focus. “A number of groups have approached us asking us to do something about the fee hikes. We listened and we have acted.” The full council will consider the proposal at its next meeting on October 9.

Teens survive ‘longest day’ The longest day is a heck of a challenge on its own, but the 22 teenagers who completed it on Saturday also had to contend with driving rain and freezing temperatures. The longest day is a finale of the CACTUS programme, which takes teens from all over Nelson on a ten week programme of exercise, problem solving and team building. CACTUS instructor Vicky Carnegie says the day saw the teens complete all sorts of physical challenges at Washington Valley, Tahunanui beach, Port Nelson, Maitai River, the Church Steps, and finish by pulling a fire engine in central Nelson.

Police praise public after chemical attack It could be another week before police know the identity of the substance used in last week’s chemical attack on a Queen St store that closed down part of Richmond’s central business district for two hours. Nelson’s Minuit to play one last local gig

Minuit started life as a covers band playing in Nelson bars, this November it will end as one of New Zealand’s finest electronic bands with five original albums and plenty of great memories. Ruth Carr, Paul Dodge and Ryan Beehre are calling a day on their 15 year-old band with four gigs around New Zealand, the first in Nelson on November 1. Ryan says the time is right to close the book on Minuit. Paul and Ruth now live in Wellington and have just adopted a child and Ryan is working on several other musical projects here in Nelson. He says they began working together in Nelson with Ryan playing guitar, Ruth on drums and Paul on bass. Then along came electronic bands like the Prodigy and Chemical Brothers and Ryan began to experiment on a newly-bought sampler he picked up from Begg’s Musicworks. “The guy from Begg’s said with this machine I could produce something like what the Prodigy were doing,” says Ryan. “I was so naïve and green about it all, but still keen to learn how to do it.” Those experiments led to a

new sound and new style of music that didn’t require a drummer, says Ryan. “We then morphed into this electronic band and Ruth came out from behind the drums and became the singer and boom – we had Minuit.” But it took the Nelson trio four years to write and produce their debut album. The process from Nelson covers band to an international quality original act wasn’t easy, but Ryan says it was well worth it when the album came out. “Because we were in Nelson it was all very DIY, it took some time for us to get out of town, play some gigs and get noticed. “But to finally get the album done and to be really happy with it was such a major step up. That was huge, and huge in the fact that it was received so well. It did exceed our expectations and it was hugely satisfying. It was also very different to anything that was on the New Zealand music scene at the time.” Then came the tours, the music videos and the stories.

Ryan says playing in Europe was a highlight, although he may not have thought so at the time. “The memory of them is really good but at the time it was a bit of a struggle. But thinking back on it, all those adventures that we had were priceless. The experiences – the good and the bad – it’s so good to think back on those and say ‘yeah, we did that. We went to Russia and carted all our gear down the street and on the subway for two and a half hours, because it was the only way to get to a gig.’” Ryan expects all those memories to come flooding out during their final shows in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Nelson, in November. But the time is right to end the Minuit journey and start afresh. “I feel this is a really good thing that we’re doing. We haven’t played together since New Year’s Eve, and this tour is just a way to say thank you to everybody who has been involved with what Minuit has been and to say goodbye” The Nelson concert is on November 1 at the Granary at Founders Heritage Park. New development at Richmond ‘gateway’ Simon Bloomberg Nelson company, Coman Holdings Limited, is considering plans to develop land adjacent to the ASB Aquatic Centre that could transform the intersection of Champion and Salisbury roads into the new northern gateway to Richmond. Last month, Progressive Enterprises announced it had purchased land from Richmond Funeral Services on the other side of Salisbury Road, potentially for a new Countdown supermarket. Now Coman Holdings has confirmed it is planning to develop 5260 square metres of

land at 149 Salisbury Rd that it purchased from the Tasman District Council - the land is opposite Raeward Fresh. “We haven’t yet made any decisions about what we will build on the site,” Coman Holdings director Bill Coman says. “We are considering a number of options and are talking with interested parties. “The size of the land means there could be more than one development. You could do a variety of things there, including retail, motels, cafes and other possible businesses.” Bill says the zoning of the land means it cannot be used for residential development.

The ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre has given a Nelson charity, that helps to provide school and sporting shoes for children in need, a big boost for its annual fundraising auction. Walk with Us was formed last year to provide free school and sport footwear and socks for children aged five to 13. The charity raised almost $15,000 at its first fundraising auction held last year allowing it to donate around 200 pairs of shoes. And thanks to the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre, the list of items for this year’s auction is shaping up to be just as good after centre manager Vaughan Hope last week gifted a year’s membership to fitness centre and pool, valued at $1037. “It’s a wonderful prize and we really appreciate their support,” Walk With Us president Carol Shirley says. “They donated the same prize last year and it sold for more than its value, so I’m sure it will be a popular item again this year.” Although the charity is only just over a year old, Carol says it is already gaining a lot of support from the business community. It is also being well received by schools and sporting clubs which benefit from the charity’s donations. “It started with eight businesswomen

One of the women had been a school teacher and she said she’d seen quite a few children who needed new shoes. “We approached the schools and got good feedback, and it grew from there. We’ve donated about 200 pairs of shoes so far and it’s growing all the time - we are expecting to grow and grow.” The charity is also supported by Stirling Sports and Number One Shoes, which have agreement with Walk with Us so that children can redeem vouchers at

their stores in Richmond and Nelson. Carol says they “already have some really good prizes” for this year’s auction that will be held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms on October 28, starting at 6.30pm. Charity ride for rescue helicopter Hundreds of motorcyclists will roar around the streets of Nelson in support of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter on Saturday. The fundraising ride is organised by the Top of the South Motorcycle Club and all motorcyclists are

welcome to come along and be a part of the action. The ride starts and finishes at the rescue helicopter’s base at Nelson Airport. Riders are asked to be there at 10am for an 11am start and entry costs $15 per rider.

Massive tree removed from Atawhai

A massive 30 metre high tree was carefully removed over two days last week. The tree was a Eucalyptus which was next to Atawhai Drive, just north of Bayview Rd. The tree came down after concerns from members of the public that the tree might be dangerous, after it was seen on more of a lean that usual. Louise Walsh, operations manager for Nelson Tree Specialists, says Nelsonians seem to be more aware of the health of trees after the Easter storm that saw several fall down. “The tree comprised of two co-dominant stems that had a crack that had formed between them, and a further major limb of the tree which appeared to have failed some time ago.” Arborist from Nelson Tree Specialists used a crane from Smiths to assist in the dismantling of the tree, lowering down each part.

Do you have a “Business Banking Expert”?

Choosing the right bank for your business can have a significant impact on its success. If you have ever owned a small business, you will know that selecting a bank is a time-consuming process. In addition to building the business and attracting and retaining customers, there is the added stress of organising a suitable financial structure. A small business owner may look to a bank or their Accountant to help. All banks will advertise that they have a version of a ‘business banking expert’. The level of efficiency, experience and autonomy with these staff is largely dependent on the size of your business. Turnover and debt levels are key aspects in regard to the seniority of the business banking manager that will be assigned to look after your accounts. Your location will also be a factor as many banks do not have business banking staff located in smaller towns. If you are a small business, with no or minimal debt levels, it is unlikely you will have a close and active relationship with a ‘business banking expert’. If you are also located in a smaller town, the best you can often hope for is a phone discussion via a 0800 to someone you may never meet face to face. Think about your experience with your current bank. Who do you talk to when you have a problem with your account? Is there a branch nearby where you can make deposits conveniently? Is the person ultimately responsible for making decisions on your loan located at the local branch? As your business grows, the convenience of dealing with these types of day-to-day account issues will play a big part in your satisfaction with your banking relationship. An established, personal relationship with a bank will make it easier for you to manage finances. Nelson cyclist leading the blind One of Nelson's most versatile cyclists, Brenda Clapp, thought she had done it all when it came to bike racing, but this Saturday she faces a new challenge when she lines up in the all-women Spring Challenge adventure race near Hokitika. Brenda has competed in a variety of road and mountainbike races on an intriguing selection of bikes, including single-speeds and tandems. Although she will be getting back on her tandem mountainbike for Saturday's team's multisport race the big difference will be that the person on the back will be blind. But Brenda isn't expecting that to slow them down. Brenda's blind team-mate, Wellington's Neelu Memon, is a super-fit athlete having been the first legally-blind person to complete the Coast to Coast in 2012 and last month climbing Africa's highest peak, the 5895 metre Mt Kilimanjaro. "She has raced on a tandem on the track at the Paralympics and she's done the Coast to Coast, so she'll be really fit," Brenda says. "It will just be a matter of communicating with her all the time we are riding and letting her know what's coming up." Neelu lost her sight after contracting a rare autoimmune illness and lapsing into a coma for four months when she was 16. She used sport to challenge herself during a lengthy rehabilitation and now the 30 year-old races competitively in road and track cycling and multisport events. Brenda will be the latest in a line of Nelson athletes and adventurers to team-up with Neelu. Spring Challenge co-organiser and world championship-winning adventure racer, Nathan Fa'avae, paddled a kayak across the Cook Straight with Neelu in 2012, while Peter Coeland and Sue Baillie climbed Kilimanjaro with her last month. It was Neelu's association with Nathan that led to her contacting Brenda about piloting a tandem bike in the Spring Challenge. "Neelu rang Nathan and said she needed a new challenge and he suggested that she could do the Spring Challenge," Brenda says. "She needed a pilot for the tandem so Nathan contacted me." The Spring Challenge has attracted 1068 athletes who will race in 356 teams, maintaining its record as the country's biggest adventure race. The race starts on Saturday morning with a 10 to 15 kilometre rafting stage, followed by mountainbiking and trekking.

Frederick George McKee (Serial No. 6/308) was born on 25 July 1892 to parents Arthur and Martha Gore McKee, of Tasman, Nelson. McKee worked as a fruit farmer in Nelson before enlisting as a Sergeant for service during World War One. He enlisted from Tasman, and joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. He embarked on 16 October 1914 from Lyttelton for Egypt. The last unit he served in was the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant which was the last rank he held. McKee was killed in action on 20 September 1916 at the Somme, France. Nelson's Lizzie wins Abel Tasman Coastal Classic

Nelson's Lizzie Wesley-Smith was the fastest woman in Saturday's Abel Tasman Coastal Classic, completing the 36 kilometre trail run from Awaroa to Marahau in under three hours. Lizzie has already gone sub-three hours in a marathon recording that milestone in Auckland in 2012 and she completed an equally impressive run along the Abel Tasman track on Saturday in 2 hours 54 minutes 50 seconds. She finished eighth overall and just two minutes short of Eveline Coombe’s 2001 record which was an outstanding result in cold, wet conditions. Florence Van Dyke of Auckland was second in her first serious long distance race while Wellington’s Nicole

Hunters and fishermen must weigh in their own catch, all game are to be caught during the hours of the competition and contestants must be present at the prize-giving to claim their reward. An energetic Nelson team performed well at the Tasman Surf Pool Competition held in Blenheim last weekend, with every member of the team of 15 coming away with podium finishes. Even with only 15 team members, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club finished the competition placed second overall. Host club Rarangi were crowned meet champions. The Nelson team aged from just nine through to masters, trained throughout the winter in readiness for the event. The Surf Pool Champs are an opportunity for club members to maintain their fitness through the winter months and compete in simulated surf activities.
